Local filmmaker Maria Matteoli spent the morning shooting a scene of her feature film, Wine of Summer, at Eureka Books. In the scene filmed here, James (played by Ethan Peck, grandson of Gregory), finds the book, Tinto de Verano, that (if I understand it correctly) sets off the action, which soon heads to Spain where most of the movie was shot this October. A photo snapped inside Eureka Books is in this week's North Coast Journal. It was taken during a book signing with author Cathleen Cahill, who talked about her book Federal Fathers and Mothers: A Social History of the United States Indian Service, 1869-1933. The book features a chapter on the Hoopa Valley Reservation.
Cahill writes this week's cover story about how native and non-native workers with the Bureau of Indian Affairs sabatoged federal efforts to kill native cultures.

Join author Cathleen Cahill at Eureka Books to celebrate the publication of her first book, Federal Fathers and Mothers: A Social History of the United States Indian Service, 1869 - 1933.
Cathleen will be available to meet and to answser questions about her research with teh Indian Service (today known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs), the bureau's connections to Northern California, and how she used local archives for her work.
Cathleen Cahill is assistant professor of history at the University of New Mexico and is a graduate of St. Bernard's High School in Eureka.

This just in: Local author Joan Dunning's new book about a mysterious ocean bird known as the Marbled Murrelet hit our shelves this afternoon.
Dunning is both author and illustrator of Seabird in the Forest, a children's book that chronicles the early life of a Murrelet chick high in the canopy of an old-growth forest.
Dunning will be at Eureka Books for Arts Alive! on April 2nd from 6-9pm to sign copies of her new book.
